What Sealants Can Do for Your Child

Protect your child’s smile with the help of dental sealants from our family dentists!

Daily brushing/flossing and attending regular dental checkups are two habits that are important to instill in your child early on to prevent common childhood dental conditions such as cavities. Of course, we also know how challenging it can be for little ones to keep those backKids teeth cavity-free. This is where dental sealants from our Cumberland, RI, family dentists can help!

What is a dental sealant?

These thin plastic coatings are applied to the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars to seal out bacteria and food from getting trapped in the grooves and ridges. Back teeth are often the hardest teeth to keep clean, largely due to how these nooks and crannies make a hospitable environment for plaque, tartar, and cavities. Sealants help prevent this.

How are dental sealants placed?

Getting sealants is easy and we know that kids will rejoice to hear that it’s completely painless. Sealants can even be placed during your child’s next dental cleaning—all we have to do is clean your child’s teeth and then paint the sealant onto the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars. After that, a curing light is simply directed over the teeth to harden the sealant into place. It’s that easy!

When should my child get sealants?

Your child’s first set of molars will usually come in around the age of 6 or 7. Once the molars have come through the gums, our dentists can place the sealants. The second set of molars will usually erupt between the ages of 11-13, so overall your child will need to come in at least twice to have sealants placed.

Are dental sealants just for kids?

While we definitely encourage children to get dental sealants as soon as their molars come in, this doesn’t mean that teens and even adults can’t benefit from getting sealants, as well. Those who are particularly prone to cavities may choose to get sealants from our Cumberland office during their next cleaning to reduce their risk. Ask us if you could benefit from sealants, too!
